Logitech MX Anywhere 2 – the ideal mouse (review)

By

If you have been hunting for a good, quality, mouse with ‘legs’, it is time to expand your search to Logitech’s premium MX offerings.

As a precursor, I am a journalist, and I do a lot of typing and mousing – I wear normal mice out in a matter of months. The problems are two-fold – first the friction-less pads underneath wear through or come off entirely, or the scroll wheel gives up feeling like it has sand in the mechanism. I am also a lefty and it needs to be comfortable in that hand, so odd shapes are out.

The A$129 Logitech MX Anywhere 2 was the result of an extensive search of JB Hi-Fi and other retailers to find notably thicker and larger friction pads – anything more is a bonus. In this case dual connectivity (Bluetooth as well as a unifying receiver), pairing to three different devices, Darkfield laser (works on glass desks and other surfaces like an airline tray), hyper-fast scroll, rechargeable battery (micro-USB is most convenient) and a very comfortable, compact, sculpted shape won me over.

Logitech classifies it as a travel mouse but after you get used to the slightly smaller mouse-print and weight it is fine for desktop use.

If you want a bigger mouse, the ergonomic MX Master is an option for right handers only. I was also tempted by the lower cost Anywhere M905 and Marathon M705 but for the few extra dollars the MX had it all.

Out of the Box

Mouse, PICO receiver, USB cable and brief instructions.

Battery

A one-minute charge gives you one hour of usage. A full charge takes about two hours and lasts up to two months based on six hours a day under typical office conditions.

Scroll

In free-spinning mode, you coast smoothly and quickly through the longest documents and Web pages, stopping instantly when you need to. Or, press on the wheel and shift to click-to-click mode for precise navigation.

Logitech Options software lets you add tailored functions and features including adjusting scroll wheel and cursor speed, enable gesture button to reproduce either Windows or Mac OS touch gestures, reassign the mouse buttons, and much more.

Specifications

Size/Weight: 100.3 x 61.6 x 34.4mm and 106g

Battery: two months’ typical use, Includes USB-A to micro-USB cable

Bluetooth: Requires Bluetooth LE – version 4.0 or later. Comes with Pico Unifying receiver as well.

Warranty: 1 year

Price:

Recommended price is A$129 which is admittedly a lot for a mouse, but it will outlast three or four cheaper ones and is easily justified.

I recommend you search on-line – you may be surprised at the value you find.
