Belkin’s Road Rockstar – 4 port, USB car charger (review)

Most new vehicles have one USB port – typically a paltry 500mA to 1.5A and these are no good for charging tablets on the go. Belkin manages to extract 7.2A from the humble cigarette lighter socket.

Belkin rockstar portsEnter Belkin’s $59.95 Road Rockstar and it was an absolute saviour on a recent road trip – its four USB ports offered a total of 7.2A, made up of a cigarette plug with 2 USB ports for a total of 2.4A and “dock” on a 1.8M cable that provides 2 x 2.4A ports. The cabled dock will easily reach the back seat and has a double-sided adhesive pad provided.

It is not hard to review a charger – does it work, does it charge? I simultaneously connected two 2.1A tablets to rear dock and two recent smartphones to the front dock.

It provided sufficient juice no only to keep the tablets running playing video and games but to charge them as well in the usual time – yes, that is good.

Belkin car ventOne of the smartphones was set up as a GPS using Belkin’s $29.95 Car Vent Mount that fits phones up to 84mm wide (iPhone 6S Plus or S6/S7 Edge). It is an excellent, sturdy, mount. The Rockstar managed to recharge the device while using it as a battery sucking GPS.

At no time did the charger or the dock get hot. Belkin throws in a $2500 connected equipment warranty (CEW) as well.

This is a 10 out of 10 from a quality company, further backed by the CEW. Highly recommended.
