Home Mobile devices REVIEW: Brush up on your Father's Day gift with an app-connected Oral-B Genius toothbrush

The humble toothbrush has gone more technological than ever before, with Braun's Oral-B GENIUS 9000 with multiple brushing modes, advanced app control and even a special case with two weeks' battery.

I like Braun. It's a globally well-known and respected company that produces a wide range of products, like shavers, toothbrushes, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, kitchen products, skin care and more.

It's technology for your body, and just like its Braun shaver series, one of which I recently reviewed, the company can make some very advanced models indeed.

Look, Braun is so good that we even have Aldi, also a German company, trying to rip off some of Braun's status by having a brand called "Bauhn", which is very naughty indeed, but also an obvious compliment given that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

In any case, while there may well be imitators, you can have the real thing that is the Braun identity instead, and the Oral-B Genius 9000 is not only an excellent example, but a cool present for anyone, Dad or no, with an excellent set of features and benefits.

Indeed, toothbrushes are something that we use everyday, if not twice a day or more, and it's something that is good for every user.

The 9000 series is actually an "intelligent brushing system", which the company compares to a "GPS for your mouth that can be personalised to suit every lifestyle".

If you or your Dad are a "techie", then you're bound to be impressed by Braun's "revolutionary Position Detection Technology combined with cutting-edge motion sensors, and video recognition using a smartphone’s camera, tracks areas being brushed so that no zone is missed".

For those who travel constantly, the Oral-B GENIUS 9000 features a stylish travel case with built-in smartphone holder, and a lithium-ion battery that lasts up to two weeks.

The toothbrush itself, when fully charged, is designed to run for up to 12 days, so while there is the very handy recharge and travel case, you won't be running out of battery life very quickly.

The aforementioned smartphone holder is a stand within the case that lets you use the app in conjunction with your brushing, in real time, for an extremely connected clean.

That's just for travelling though, as the package comes with smartphone suction-based holder for your bathroom so you can place your phone there temporarily while you brush!

It's all very impressive, and brings brushing well into the 21st century.

The case also lets you charge your smartphone via standard USB plug, while the case's power plug can charge both case and smartphone at the same time.

The Genius range is also impressive with five distinct “brushing journeys” to choose from to personalise your brushing routine – whitening, sensitivity, fresh breath, plaque fighting, gum health or orthodontic care, which means that even a tongue cleaning mode is included.

From every angle, this is THE most impressive toothbrush I have ever used.

From different lighting on a light ring to highlight which mode you're in, to the amazing app that gives you so much useful data on your tooth brushing routine, right down to things you've probably experienced before where the brush pulsates to let you know you've spent 30 seconds on that particular quarter of your mouth, the Braun Oral-B Genius 9000 is the ultimate toothbrush.

Even the brush heads have bristles at different angles in a circular formation to deliver a better clean, rather than just straight bristles down.

I honestly don't know how Braun can make this any better in future models. No doubt they will find ways to let you brush even better, but I'm wondering if an actual tooth-brushing robot or gravity-defying levitating tooth brush is the only way to make this better, with those technologies well beyond current technology.

Obviously, Father's Day is on Sunday, September 2, and yes, there's a million things you can get him on this day, from experiences and gadgets, to real and meaningful family time, right down to the boring but traditional socks and ties.

This new brush would make a fantastic present, and not just for Dad, but Mum, too, especially with the range of colours on offer, as well as for yourself or really, anyone in the family.

That said, Oral-B does have toothbrushes specifically designed for kids, as well as the Disney Magic Timer app for smartphones and tablets, too.

So, what you decide to do is up to you, but if you want to brush away more boring presents and give someone the gift of what is arguably the best oral health you can get, this is a device you shouldn't give the brush off but should brush up on and definitely consider – it's that good!

The black version of the Oral-B GENIUS 9000 is available exclusively from Shaver Shop.

The white version of the Oral-B GENIUS 9000 is available from Shaver Shop, Harvey Norman, David Jones, Myer, Bing Lee and Amazon.

The RRP for both is A$349, but street or retail prices in stores are much more competitive – I see Harvey Normal selling the white version for A$199, while the Shaver Shop has the black model for A$219. Meanwhile, Amazon Australia sells the white model for A$179, so there's great competition and prices out there. Be sure to ask stores to price match and see what happens.

You'll find the 9000 series in purple and pink colours here too, which you can also see in the two official videos below:
