Canberra calls for high profile CIO

Peter Nikoletatos, formerly chief information officer at WA's Curtin University has now landed in Canberra.

Mr Nikoletatos, who is also vice chairman of the Council of Australian University Directors of IT, (Caudit) has taken up the role as CIO and director of information services at the Australian National University. He remains a board member of AARNet.

During his time at Curtin Mr Nikoletatos was seen as a visionary university sector CIO, and drove a major cloud computing initiative during which Curtin was a key beta test user of Optus' Australian cloud services.

His cloud based experience will come in handy at ANU which last month announced it had completed installing a Silicon Graphics private data cloud storage system offering up to 11 petabytes' RAID capacity. The ANU had turned to the cloud solution since its data was doubling every 14-18 months and it had to provide a solution able to be accessed by the university's two major campuses.

Asked recently about the priorities that university CIOs would have to tackle during 2012 Mr Nikoletatos cited disaster recovery, unified communications, data management and analytics and security and risk management as the headline issues for the year ahead.
