NBN Tasmania is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of NBN Co, but was intended to be a joint-venture between the Commonwealth and Tasmanian governments and the state-owned utility Aurora Energy. As iTWire reported earlier this month that plan fell through.
According to a biography of Alexander provided when he addressed the Funding Connect conference in Tasmania in March this year "Darren's passion is Tasmanian small business, the Tasmanian ICT industry and in particular the National Broadband Network.
"In 2009, Darren was invited by the prime minister Kevin Rudd, and senator Stephen Conroy '¦ to speak at the "Realising our Broadband Future" forum alongside [Tasmanian] premier David Bartlett to discuss the possibilities and opportunities the NBN may have for business.
"Darren represents the ICT and small business industries on a number of boards, including: president of TAS ICT, Tasmania's peak industry body; director of the TCCI board; chairman of TCCI Small Business committee, Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and director on the board of Stompin.
"Darren was also appointed by the minister to represent ICT on the Industry Council, and is the facilitator of the Northern ICT CEOs' group; Tasmanian Ambassador for Pitch Club; a panelist for the National Project Reference Group; chairman of the Northern Tasmanian NBCF fundraising committee and founder and chairman of the 5 Days of Innovation Festival to be held in 2010."
On his LinkedIn profile he lists his interests as being: "New technologies, innovation in telecommunications, new IT toys for boys, cricket, AFL football, NBA basketball."
According to Conroy Alexander has been actively involved in the Tasmanian ICT industry for the past 10 years. "He represents the ICT and small business industries on a number of boards including as chairman of Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's small business committee. He is also the president of TAS ICT."
His main role is as CEO of Autech, which describes itself as "a world-leading design house which provides innovative marketing solutions to the international paint and building product manufacturing community." (When you go to buy paint and ponder over rows and rows of coloured swatches you could well be using an Autech product).
Autech was named Australian Regional Exporter of the Year at the 2009 Australian Export Awards and was judged Australia's Most Innovative Company at the 2007 G'Day USA Innovation Shootout.
