Equinix extends Oracle Cloud Infrastructure global reach, spanning five continents

Global interconnection and data centre provider, Equinix, today announced its role in enabling enterprises across five continents to privately connect to Oracle Cloud.

Equinix — the name meaning “Equality, Neutrality, Internet Exchange” — was established in 1998 as an independent data centre provider to would bridge disparate businesses, telecommunication and network carriers in a neutral location.

The benefits to business and consumers alike include, among others, reduced latency wherever a network path switches carriers. For example, Netflix wants its users to have the best experience no matter who their Internet provider is. By housing services within Equinix Netflix can deliver on this, using carrier interconnects instead of going through the exchange network.

Similarly, in the world of hybrid cloud, it is not uncommon for an organisation to have, say, an AWS application drawing from an Azure data warehouse. Again, AWS and Microsoft leverage Equinix facilities to optimise their customer’s experiences, reducing latency to other clouds through interconnects in a neutral location.

Or, a multinational enterprise may seek the greatest possible connectivity between all its sites and its applications.

It’s this last scenario Equinix speaks to today. Robert Blackburn, Global Managing Director, Oracle Alliance at Equinix (pictured), explains a significant driver was strong demand from enterprises to digitally transform their global businesses by migrating Oracle workloads from on-premise to Oracle Cloud.

Oracle realised many ExaData customers want to get data from hybrid clouds but experience a latency issue due to the on-premise nature of their environment and recognised the value for customers moving ExaData to Equinix where it is as close as it can be to other cloud edge nodes.

On Monday Larry Ellison announced Oracle’s intentions to expand Oracle Cloud’s regional footprint, and today Equinix announced the expansion of their partnership. Customers in Sydney, São Paulo, Tokyo, Toronto and Zurich now have private and highly secure connectivity to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect via Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric or ECX Fabric.

This cloud interconnection delivers fast and secure access to applications, databases and other services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Additionally, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect delivers a secured and dedicated connection between customers’ data centres and Oracle Cloud. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect via ECX Fabric, enterprises can migrate and run compute, applications and data workloads to Oracle Cloud in a high-throughput, scalable manner that reduces costs and delivers consistent and predictable performance.

Glenn Udiam, Senior Director, Operations, Equinix Australia, said, “Equinix constantly strives to deliver a high-quality user experience for our customers and enable them to connect with the services and applications they need at the digital edge. Our expansion in Sydney demonstrates our commitment to helping businesses in Australia further their digital transformation journeys and we are thrilled to offer our customers with a presence in our local facilities access to the Oracle Cloud via our ECX Fabric.”

Whether a customer requires direct connection to Oracle as part of a broader interconnection strategy, or if they need to migrate data-heavy applications to the cloud, connection to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure on Platform Equinix is a highly scalable solution for many enterprise users.

Oracle FastConnect is currently deployed in six Equinix IBX data centres including Sydney, Amsterdam, Chicago, Frankfurt, London and Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia. Additionally, Equinix offers private onramps to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect via ECX Fabric available in 34 metros globally, more than any other provider.

“As companies around the world are prioritising digital transformation as a way to gain a competitive advantage, we’re seeing increased customer demand to migrate Oracle workloads to Oracle Cloud. The reality is that companies that are adopting digital transformation are thriving, and those that are not are being left behind. With this direct access, our mutual customers can create a high-speed, low-latency connection that allows them to fully realise the benefits of their Oracle deployment. We are excited to deepen our collaboration with Oracle and offer this service in these new metros across the globe,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn also noted Telstra as distinguishing itself for the features its Telstra Programmable Network has, and the advanced API integration it has with Equinix, allowing customers to create temporary networks between data centres on-demand and as-needed.
