Splunk announces new predictive industrial IoT analytics


Big data aggregator and analysis vendor Splunk has announced its first Internet of Things solution, Splunk Industrial Asset Intelligence.

IAI is designed to help manufacturing, oil, gas, transportation, energy and utility organisations monitor and analyse their industrial IoT data in real-time. The product creates a simple view of complex industrial systems while helping to minimise asset downtime.

Splunk’s research indicates by 2025 more than 25% of data in the “global datasphere” will be real-time data, and more than 95% of this will be from IoT devices. Other research foresees 55 billion Internet-connected devices by 2025.

The potential for IoT is endless, from industrial control in critical infrastructure, to even just knowing you left the tap on at home.

Splunk recognises with the rapid increase in IoT data, which will only grow in coming years, industrial engineers and analysts are often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of machine data generated by disparate industrial control systems and sensors.

This is the reason behind Splunk IAI, explains Seema Haji, director of Product Marketing, IoT, Splunk. “Splunk IAI offers a packaged set of capabilities that help customers pivot their operational strategy from reactive to proactive.”

Splunk IAI is built on top of Splunk Enterprise and captures and correlates data from industrial control systems, sensors, SCADA systems and applications, providing a data-driven approach to industrial operations. Its users can monitor and diagnose equipment and operational issues in real-time, allowing them to respond faster and avoid production-impacting events which could well cost millions of dollars.

Haji says Splunk IAI has already seen customers using the testing version reduce downtime by more than 200% because they were better able to predict faults and be proactive. 

“Real-time analytics is an absolute must for manufacturers today, but organisations are struggling to bridge the gap between legacy systems, industrial assets and sensor data,” said Ammar Maraqa, senior vice-president, business operations and strategy and general manager of IoT Markets, Splunk.  “Splunk IAI provides a single solution that ensures industrial systems are running at full capacity, enabling organisations to significantly save resources and money on unplanned downtime.”

“Working with Splunk Industrial Asset Intelligence has helped us significantly reduce the time spent on troubleshooting equipment issues,” said Ricardo Bicudo, vessel performance manager, Sapura Navegacao Maritima. “This is a key factor for our company strengthening our safety and operational standards.”

Splunk IAI will be introduced on 23 April at the Hannover Messe industrial conference. It will be available from that date to a limited audience and will be available for all Splunk customers later in the year.

At this time, the limited availability release will be uncharged, with new pricing plans to be announced later.
