Microsoft's vision – a foldable phone-to-tablet device

Microsoft has applied for a patent for a foldable phone-to-tablet device that portends the path to the future where everything it rollable, foldable and always connected.

Foldables are not new – according to the Korean Herald, Samsung is reportedly readying a Galaxy X foldable that turns into a 7” tablet for limited release in late 2017. LG are also said to be planning something similar for early 2018 and the Economic Times of Korea says Microsoft may be purchasing LG’s screen

Of course, there are going to be issues with the fold but FOLED (flexible organic light emitting diode) technology has come a long way in a short time and all designs use a larger Surface Book like hinge to ensure the arc is not too tight. MS Power User has patent images here.

If the foldable screen works it may be extended to a third or even fourth panel. But one thing is for sure – rollables and foldables are how things are going for the future.

Samsung has a promo video on this here

Below is a look at Microsoft’s vision for the future. This writer saw it a couple of years ago, and it has ended up on YouTube. It portends the Surface, Dial, Studio, and many more technology trends.
