The software giant said in a statement: "We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating."
Users have complained that they have lost files from the C:/Users/[username]/Documents/ folder. One user complained that he had lost 220 gigabytes of files which he had accumulated over 23 years.
Another user said he had files on one hard drive blown away while the SSD in his machine did not seem to work very well.
As a workaround for those who had already lost files, the company advised, "If you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files after an update, please minimise your use of the affected device and contact us directly.
"We will provide an update when we resume rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to customers."
It said Windows 10, version 1809 and Windows Server, version 1809 were both affected.
