LAUNCH VIDEO: OPPO starts Android 11 launch with ColorOS 11 for Find X2, 28 OPPO models to get update

By

OPPO proclaims it is now a global top 5 smartphone brand, and has upped the ante with its ColorOS 11, which is in beta for the Find X2 series from today and rolling out to 28 models between now and Q2 2021.

Android smartphone powerhouse OPPO has launched its new ColorOS 11, based on Android 11, with a host of new features, not only from Android 11 itself, but from ColorOS 11 too.

iTWire covered the announcement of the coming new features in colleague Sam Varghese's article from last week entitled "OPPO to release new OS version based on Android 11 on Monday", which covers some of the new features.

Although not all OPPO smartphones will get the new OS, OPPO has certainly been quick to announce Android 11 is coming and is already available for its flagship models from today, which is light years quicker than most of its competitors, even if some of those 28 models will still have to wait until Q2 2021.

Only Google itself is faster, having granted its Pixel 2 and better range of smartphones immediate access to Android 11 last week, as seen in Google's official blog post.

So, where can you watch the ColorOS 11 launch?

You can watch it at Facebook and Twitter, but an easy place to watch it is at YouTube, and we have embedded the launch video directly below for you to enjoy, with the article continuing thereafter, please read on!

Hosting the event was Lynn Ni, the "Design Project Lead of Oppo ColorOS". She noted that OPPO has been designing ColorOS for the last seven years, with last year's version dubbed ColorOS 7.

The jump to ColorOS 11 was made to reflect the Android version and to eliminate confusion over which version of Android each version of ColorOS was meant to reflect.

Ni explained that as of Q2 2020 there were over 370 million ColorOS active users in 140+ countries and regions, with the brand increasing its market share by 10% quarter over quarter in Q2, enabling the brand to enter the top 5 of smartphones.

Part of the launch was OPPO's new “Make Life Flow” concept. The company explains that "ColorOS 11 maintains the beloved stock Android features while providing the rich UI customisation sought by OPPO users.

"Its rapid launch, which follows on the heels of Google’s Android 11 announcement, is the result of a close collaboration between the two companies to launch in record time."

We're also told that there is a "new level of UI customisation to unleash your personality".

OPPO explains that "ColorOS 11 offers an unprecedented level of UI customisation to help users unleash their imagination and personalise their experience. Users can essentially create their own Always-On Display, theme, and wallpaper, as well as fonts, icons, and ringtones.

"This latest upgrade also enhances stock Android’s Dark Mode with three color schemes and levels of contrast. Meanwhile, OPPO Relax 2.0 lets users create their own white noise mix while also offering an extensive and immersive collection of sounds from cities around the world".

OPPO Australia Managing Director, Michael Tran said: "ColorOS 11’s focus on UI customisation is rooted in the customer’s desire for a more personalised and unique phone experience.

“The colours team has heeded the user feedback for greater UI customisation, offering a more personalised UI that encompasses a wide range of features. In doing so, we are providing users with ample space to demonstrate their creativity and exercise control over their handsets,” added Tran.

The claim of "greater efficiency than ever before".

OPPO also states that "ColorOS 11 is equipped with robust features that improve work and life efficiency. Among them is the Three-Finger Translate powered by Google Lens, the first feature co-created by OPPO and Google. It captures and translates text through a simple screenshot taken with a three-finger gesture.

"Flexdrop, another new feature, provides a simple and intuitive solution for multi-tasking. Users can watch video and text at the same time, which is particularly useful for gamers and video-lovers. Users can even switch between and control different smart home devices through a new Device Control menu, without having to download new apps.

"To maximise available battery, the new Super Power Saving Mode lets users select six apps to run in low-battery situations. Meanwhile, Battery Guard prevents damage from prolonged charging at unstable power voltages by learning user habits. It intelligently pauses charging once it reaches 80% at night, before resuming to achieve a full charge by the time users wake up."

Unparalleled smoothness to “Make Life Flow”

Then there's the promise of visual performance. Here the company states: "While high frame rates are a positive industry advancement, phones often experience lags and stutters as a result.

"To combat this, ColorOS 11 has introduced UI First 2.0, which combines OPPO’s proprietary lag-reducing engine with Quantum Animation. This boosts RAM utilisation by 45%, improving the response rate by 32% and the frame rate by 17%.

"Meanwhile, AI App Preloading learns user behavior to preload the most-used apps, reducing loading time. SuperTouch also intelligently identifies user scenarios and optimises the touch response speed accordingly, improving system fluency."

A heightened focus on user security and privacy

Then we get to the statement that "ColorOS 11 incorporates stock Android 11's newly added privacy options while creating a series of additional privacy protection and data security features. Private System creates a separate system where a second version of apps and data runs independent of the original, and is accessible only via a separate fingerprint scan or password.

"A new shortcut to App Lock enables users to lock apps through password, fingerprint, or facial verification. The permissions system has also been enhanced, with temporary permissions that reset camera, microphone, and location access when the app is closed.

"Meanwhile, auto-reset permissions return app permission settings to default if they haven’t been used in a long time. To prevent malicious apps from accessing other apps’ data, scoped storage restricts apps’ access to phone data, requesting user permission in order to do so".

The fastest and widest rollout in ColorOS history

OPPO states that "the current beta launch of ColorOS 11 invites tech-savvy users to explore the new features and offer feedback, with an official version to follow in the coming weeks. ColorOS 11 will be released in a batch-by-batch approach, starting with the Find X2 Series. The complete rollout will cover 28-plus phone models, including the Find, Reno, and A series."

Now’s the Time for 400G Migration

The optical fibre community is anxiously awaiting the benefits that 400G capacity per wavelength will bring to existing and future fibre optic networks.

Nearly every business wants to leverage the latest in digital offerings to remain competitive in their respective markets and to provide support for fast and ever-increasing demands for data capacity. 400G is the answer.

Initial challenges are associated with supporting such project and upgrades to fulfil the promise of higher-capacity transport.

The foundation of optical networking infrastructure includes coherent optical transceivers and digital signal processing (DSP), mux/demux, ROADM, and optical amplifiers, all of which must be able to support 400G capacity.

With today’s proprietary power-hungry and high cost transceivers and DSP, how is migration to 400G networks going to be a viable option?

PacketLight's next-generation standardised solutions may be the answer. Click below to read the full article.
