iPhone 4 and Barbie: top US eBay obsessions

By

Although the status of the US as the world's consumer engine is supposedly waning, the US is still the world's top cultural engine, and what US consumers want still makes waves, with the iPhone 4 listed as one of eBay's 'gotta-have gadgets' in the No.1 spot.

Apple has certainly done well in 2010, continuing its success of earlier years, and while this is recorded in all manner of ways, from sales figures to media coverage to miniature dolls of Apple's CEO, popularity on eBay is another legitimate way to measure success.

eBay's press release on its 'Top Shopped' items shows that the iPhone 4 was in the No.1, with the iPad in No.5 spot.

eBay says that the iPhone 4 had '1,634,674 related items sold', whereas the iPad saw '621,399 related items sold'.

Astoundingly, Apple's tech is the only tech that made it into eBay's top list, as you can see below, with everything else being either toys, sports, music or fashion.

1. iPhone 4
2. Barbie
3. Military jackets
4. Hot Wheels
5. iPad
6. World Cup
7. The Beatles
8. Silly Bandz
9. Alice in Wonderland
10. New Orleans Saints
11. Marc Jacobs
12. LeBron James

The data comes from US eBay listings from 'Jan. 1, 2010, to Dec. 19, 2010', with eBay's 'Top Shopped' picks being 'culled from items sold pertaining to pop culture phenomena across multiple categories.'

This makes the singling out of Apple's iPhone 4 and iPad all the more remarkable, seeing as there are plenty of other popular electronic technologies and brand names out there, but when it comes to the top 10, let along the top 12 as eBay has listed, only Apple has made the cut.

Is it safe to predict a similar showing for the iPhone 5 and the iPad 2? We'll have to wait until next year to find out for sure, but at this stage, unless Android OS 2.4 or 3.0 "Honeycomb" tablets live up to their promise in 2011, Apple will likely take the cake in 2011, too.

Fascinating stuff!
