IKEA Democratic Design Days 2018 Australia: FULL VIDEOS of the Smart Home Talk and Gaming Talk sessions

By

IKEA held its first "Democratic Design Days" event late last month, which not only included a range of IKEA collections, but also featured some great talks, of which we filmed two, in full.

You can find a great write-up of IKEA's Democratic Design Days event over at the News Limited website, across several articles.

Here they are if you haven't already read them: "Ikea’s ‘democratic design’: the five must-have design features every new product now has to have", "Ikea’s bottom-customised chair is targeting gamers" and "The a.i.r. sofa, the Ikea product that was ‘one of the biggest mistakes’ in the company’s history".

iTWire was also invited to the event, and we were granted permission to film a couple of sessions, these being the Smart Home Talk session, and the Gaming Talk session.

Here are the session's descriptions, followed by the videos of the sessions themselves:

Smart Home Talk: Future Homes – Smarter, flexible and inspired by the sense

"The feeling of home is defined by more than just physical location – it’s a layered experience of all the five senses that create our sense of belonging, comfort and happiness.

"IKEA brought together a diverse panel of thought leaders across technology, design and research to explore and discuss how our homes will evolve with smart technology, the impact of urbanisation and the emotional and physical needs that shape the future of home design."

Speakers included:

  • IKEA head of Design, Marcus Engman (SWE)
  • IKEA Australia head of Interior Design, Tiffany Buckins (AU)
  • UTS Professor for Spatial Theory and director of Interior Architecture, Thea Brejzek (AU)
  • IKEA designer, Andreas Fredriksson (SWE)

Gaming Talk: Designing a gamers ultimate battleground

"With more than two billion gamers across the globe, this unique niche market can no longer be ignored. IKEA, Area Academy and gaming influencer Steven ‘Bajo’ O’Donnell, discussed the future of gaming and its impact on life at home."

Speakers included:

  • Marcus Engman, IKEA Head of Design
  • Tommy Ingemarsson, Founder Area Academy
  • Steven ‘Bajo’ O’Donnell, Twitch streamer

Here's Engman's bio:

"Engman has been the head of design at IKEA since 2012 but his history with the home furnishing retailer goes way back. Born in 1966 and raised in Älmhult, Sweden — the small town where IKEA was founded — Engman spent his high school years working at the IKEA store.

"During the mid-1980s, Engman was an apprentice to IKEA interior designer Mary Ekmark. Over a period of 12 years, he went on to other IKEA roles like communications & interior design manager, and global range strategist and marketing manager (retail) for IKEA in Sweden.

"He then founded his own retail agency before taking on his current position as head of design.

"Now he is at the forefront of creating and developing IKEA range and products, bringing beautiful and functional design to the many people."
