Cortana invokes right to fight Alexa in the home

Harman/Kardon has released details of its INVOKE, a Cortana-powered home digital assistant taking more than a few styling cues from Echo and Alexa but increasing the functionality.

Initial publicity says initially, it will be in the US only and it is not likely to be in Australia before the end of the year.

At its heart is a tall, tapered cone shaped, 360° sound speaker with Cortana intelligence provided from the Microsoft Azure cloud. It can link to Windows 10, Android and iOS devices as well meaning it can access email, calendar, contacts, documents, and more – and record your preferences and what it learns about you in a user editable diary.

Microsoft stated in a blog that one can play one's favourite music, manage calendars and activities, set reminders, check traffic, and deliver the latest news and much more.

With Skype integration, one can make calls to cell phones, landlines, and other Skype-enabled devices. One can also voice control your compatible smart home devices to do things like turn out the lights or control the temperature.
