Boingo expands WiFi access in Australia via Tomizone hotspots

By
US based Boingo Wireless - which provides wireless Internet access around the globe through arrangements with local WiFi hotspot operators - has added the 16,000 Tomizone hotspots in Australia, China, India, New Zealand and several Pacific Islands, to its global network.

Boingo's agreement with New Zealand based Tomizone gives its customers access to 4,000 Tomizone locations in Australia immediately; access to the remaining 12,000 Tomizone hotspots will be made available in coming months.

Tomizone has an unusual business model . Although it boasts citywide networks in Auckland and Perth, many of its hotspots are wireless access points bought for residential use. These come bundled with Tomizone software and users have the option to activate this making the Internet accessible via their access point and broadband service to Tomizone subscribers for a share of the fees charged by Tomizone. These hotspots can be located via the Tomizone web site.

When iTWire spoke to Tomizone founder Steve Simms in May 2008 he claimed only 600 hotspots in Australia and 400 in New Zealand. By February 2009 he claimed to have the largest network in Australia, 6000 against Telstra's 1500, and 10,000 globally.

The following month Tomizone moved into China announcing agreements with two carriers to enable local and foreign visitor credit card holders to access an initial network of 2000 hotspots at major airports, popular hotels and other key venues. The company said at the time that it hoped to grow this to 10,000 by the end of 2009. However it is still quoting 2000 in China.
