Android OS 9 'Pie' launches, easy as pie, but kinda boring name Featured

By

Instead of a more flamboyant name for the latest version of the Android OS smartphone and tablet operating system, its name is "Pie", and it's meant to be easy as.

Promising its new OS is "powered by AI for a smarter, simpler experience that adapts to you", Google has launched Android 9 in a blog post by Sameer Samat, the vice-president of Product Management, Android and Google Pay.

The OS mimics the iPhone X iOS operating system in terms of having the ability to swipe up to see a stack of cards that show you open apps, which changes the way Android OS is usually operated, obviously vindicating the change that Apple made with the iPhone X

Samat states in his blog post that Google has "built Android 9 to learn from you — and work better for you — the more you use it.

"From predicting your next task so you can jump right into the action you want to take, to prioritising battery power for the apps you use most, to helping you disconnect from your phone at the end of the day, Android 9 adapts to your life and the ways you like to use your phone.

"Android 9 aims to make your phone even smarter by learning from you and adapting to your usage patterns. That’s why Android 9 comes with features like Adaptive Battery, which learns the apps you use most and prioritises battery for them, and Adaptive Brightness, which learns how you like to set the brightness in different settings, and does it for you.

"Android 9 also helps you get things done faster with App Actions, which predicts what you’ll want to do next based on your context and displays that action right on your phone. Say it’s Tuesday morning and you’re preparing for your commute: you’ll be suggested actions like navigating to work on Google Maps or resuming an audiobook with Google Play Books.

"And when you put in headphones after work, you may see options to call your mom or start your favourite Spotify playlist."

iTWire has been playing with the Android OS 9 beta on an Pixel 2 XL, and it has worked beautifully, with Google's Pixel devices naturally first to be able to download the OS update.

Other manufacturers will make 9 Pie available in due course, but naturally it can take months for those OEMs to have their updates ready.

You can read more at the Android home page and plenty more at the Android 9 blog post

We'll have more on Android 9 Pie as we have a chance to play with the final version, now that it has been released.
