Seagate ships 10 Millionth hybrid drive

By

Two years after Seagate shipped the first hybrid solid-state/hard-disk drive, the company has announced the 10 millionth unit has left its premises.

A hybrid drive combines the performance of an SSD with the capacity and cost-effectiveness of a hard drive.

According to Seagate officials, hybrid drives provide between three and four times the performance of a normal hard drive in typical PC usage.

"We are seeing growing demand for our SSHDs [solid state hard disks] from the world's leading PC manufacturers," said Seagate vice president of global marketing Scott Horn.

"Hybrid technology is proving to be what we always thought it would be - the ultimate combination of high-performance and capacity needs with the price point that's right for both budget constrained IT organizations and consumers.

"This achievement is also a reflection of the continued commitment from our dedicated employees whose relentless dedication and personal pride continue to be the fabric of this company."

According to IDC, the hybrid drive market grew by more than 400% over the last year.
