NBN Co staff were informed of Thorpe’s departure today via an internal email from chief operating officer Greg Adcock, who praised Thorpe for his efforts.
“Richard joined NBN Co in November 2012 and was appointed to lead Construction just over a year ago. In that time he has played a central role in the expansion of the NBN’s geographical reach,” Adcock said in the email.
"I know I can rely on you to give Peter and Jan your full support during this interim period as we work towards transitioning NBN Co to a multi-technology model."
"Both appointments come into effect immediately and will remain in place for the duration of the COO organisational review," Adcock said.
Thorpe was given the important role at NBN Co just over a year ago to take over from former construction chief Dan Fleming, who was made redundant in a business restructure.
The email said Thorpe’s position will be temporarily filled by Peter Ryan, a former Vodafone Australia executive, who was until now general manager implementation at NBN Co.
Ryan’s responsibilities have been handed over to NBN Co’s business improvement manager Jan de Kock.
The departure of Thorpe means he's the third head of contstruction in three years to leave the company.
