More than 300,000 .eu domains to be cancelled due to Brexit

By

The European Union will cancel all .eu domains which have been registered by registrants in Britain after the country completes the Brexit process.

An official statement to this effect by the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, came after the UK submitted the notification of its intention to withdraw from the EU on 29 March.

According to the latest statistics, there are a total of 300,878 .eu domains registered by British registrants.

The EC statement said: "In view of the considerable uncertainties, in particular concerning the content of a possible withdrawal agreement, the .eu Top Level Domain Registry, accredited .eu Registrars, .eu domain names registrants, applicants for .eu domains names and generally stakeholders are reminded of legal repercussions, which need to be considered when the United Kingdom becomes a third country.

"Subject to any transitional arrangement that may be contained in a possible withdrawal agreement, the EU regulatory framework for the .eu Top Level Domain will no longer apply to the United Kingdom as from the withdrawal date."

The statement added: "As of the withdrawal date, undertakings and organisations that are established in the United Kingdom but not in the EU and natural persons who reside in the United Kingdom will no longer be eligible to register .eu domain names or, if they are .eu registrants, to renew .eu domain names registered before the withdrawal date."
