Video shows deepest eruption of undersea volcano

The hi-def video was recorded onboard the U.S. Jason robotic submersible while it was over 1,100 meters (3,610 feet) underwater, and southwest of the Samoan Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean.

The Russian volcano Sarychev Peak erupted on June 12, 2009, and now you can see a plume of ash and sulfur dioxide mixing with the normal sunset to produce a lavender, or purplish, sunset throughout the northern United States and Europe.

On June 12, 2009, the crew of the International Space Station just happened to be zipping overhead at just the moment the Sarychev Peak volcano erupted. The Russian volcano produced magnificent images now available on the Web from many different sources.
