Telemarketing might be big business, but Australians hate it - not least because it's costing $A1.58 billion a year in wasted time.

Well over two million Australians have tried to block telemarketing calls since the Do-Not-Call register came into effect in May 2007, but only personal fixed and mobile phone numbers can be registered at present. The government is now looking at expanding its scope to any phone, and fax numbers.

More than two million telephone numbers have been listed on the on the Do-Not-Call Register since its launch one year ago but the expected impact on outbound telemarketing does not appear to have occurred.
