India's smartphone market saw a sharp fall of 50.6% year-on-year in second quarter shipments, the technology analyst firm IDC says, but said the market was expected to recover in the second half of the year despite this steep decline.

A drop in the decline of smartphone shipments in June, when there was only a small fall of 0.3% year-on-year, ensured that Indian smartphone shipments would recover to some extent in the second quarter and end with 18 million units, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says.

Indian smartphone shipments fell by 48% in the second quarter of the year, the analyst firm Canalys says, adding that the drop, to 17.3 million units, came as the country faced a shutdown of its economy until May due to the coronavirus pandemic.
