A crackdown on scams perpetrated over phone networks is underway as the Australian Government works with the telecommunications industry regulator ACMA in an effort to combat the increasing scurge of scams.
More than $4 million has been lost to online shopping scams by Australians in 2019 so far - well in excess of the $3.8 million fleeced from unsuspecting consumers last year - and the losses are expected to mount over the busy Christmas shopping period.
The government has made the use of two-factor authentication compulsory when porting mobile numbers from one provider to another, in what it says is a big step to keep Australians safe from telephone scammers.
