While people have been scratching their heads over the cost of the NSW Government schools laptops program, over the next three years Lenovo, Microsoft and Adobe will rake in $600 million. And the big losers out of this first world version of a one laptop per student program will be taxpayers and the wider IT industry.

Microsoft and Lenovo have won a massive deal worth hundreds of millions to supply sub-notebooks running Windows XP and Microsoft Office to 200,000 year 9 students in NSW state schools. The three year deal, with an option to renew, will see all year 9 students get the notebooks to keep for the remainder of their school years and beyond.

After twenty-seven quarters of steady growth there’s now been a damaging decline in server shipments in the Asia Pacific region, down 5.8 percent year-on-year, and with a major impact on revenues across the main five APAC sub regions.
