Ford Motor Company will invest US$1 billion during the next five years in Argo AI, an artificial intelligence company, to develop a virtual driver system for the automaker’s autonomous vehicle which is expected in 2021 – and for potentially licensing to other companies.
Ford has invested $2 billion in research and development over the past six years to launch and upgrade a record number of products, including the rapid rollout of SYNC 3.
Ford has flagged it will produce a fully autonomous vehicle designed for ride sharing. It should be on U.S. roads by 2021. Autonomous vehicles are part of Ford Smart Mobility - its plan to be a leader in the field as well as in connectivity, mobility, customer experience, and data and analytics.
