As the explosion in the capacity demands of data-hungry applications outpaces current high-speed transport abilities, 400G is a promising new technology that supports an immediate need in fibre optics with comparatively low operational expenses (OPEX) and smaller footprint.
Nokia Bell Labs has claimed a world record with its researchers setting the record for the highest single carrier bit rate at 1.52 Terabits per second (Tbit/s) over 80 km of standard single mode fibre -- the equivalent of simultaneously streaming 1.5 million YouTube videos – or four times the market’s current state-of-the-art of approximately 400 Gigabits per second.
