Is Linux really free software?

Is the Linux kernel really free, as in freedom? Or is it following the "open core" model defined by Andrew Lampitt in 2008, as claimed by Alexandre Oliva of the Free Software Foundation Latin America?

VLC dev accuses Apple of licence infringement

Rémi Denis-Courmont, one of the core developers of the VLC media player, has formally notified Apple that it is indulging in copyright infringement by distributing the media player for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
