Ericsson wants to be telcos' 'Televisionary'

The 'holy grail' of service providers as broadcasting and fixed and mobile communications converge is the 'three screens' model: the ability to deliver, and receive, integrated video content via PCs, TVs and mobile devices, and Ericsson is making a big push to be the preferred supplier to deliver on this vision.

The trend towards building HSPA modems directly into laptops goes into overdrive as Ericsson launches a new HSPA and GPS equipped notebook module, with Dell the latest major international customer, after Lenovo earlier this year. Who needs dongles and cards, when built-in is better?

Long Term Evolution not so far away

In less than two years the next phase of 3G cellular technology should be commercially available and its backers say it will be cost and performance competitive with ADSL. This raises some rather interesting issues for rural Australia.
