A bill aimed at ending the spread of material about child sexual abuse material online has been approved by the US Senate Judiciary Committee after it tried to allay concerns that that it went too far and would endanger the privacy of ordinary users.
A developer of the messaging app Signal, that offers end-to-end encryption, has used the situation created by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to warn Americans of the dangers to their privacy if legislators manage to put in place a new law known as the EARN IT Act that could make the use of end-to-end encryption unlawful.
In Australia, the government is using the increasing incidence of online child sexual exploitation to give the military intelligence agency, the Australian Signals Directorate, a domestic role. It claims this role will be restricted only to cases of child sexual abuse.
