The level of public criticism and opposition to the Federal Government's encryption bill has come about because it was developed with very little consultation and then suddenly dumped on the public, the head of Internet Australia, Dr Paul Brooks, says.
Telecommunications industry lobby group Communications Alliance has cautioned against Australian Government recommendations that could threaten the TIO’s independence by placing the ombudsman under the control of ACMA but welcomed the Government’s decision to “retain” the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.
The Communications Alliance, or more accurately its boss, John Stanton, was the most forthright of the multitudes who appeared at the first hearing of the encryption bill before the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.
