US hits Huawei with criminal, fraud charges

Chinese telecommunications equipment provider Huawei Technologies has been hit with criminal charges, among others, by the US, with the indictments being unveiled on Monday, the first day of work after a government shutdown, and just a couple of days before the US and China resume talks on a trade dispute.

The FBI has grossly exaggerated, on more than one occasion, the number of digital devices it cannot access due to encryption, claiming a figure of 7800 when the actual figure was between 1000 and 2000.

Both Democrats and Republicans from the US House of Representatives have characterised as "highly questionable" the FBI's claim that it could not gain access to 7800 mobile devices last year.
