The battle between multivendor handset platforms is heating up: the LiMo Foundation has announced new members and new handsets, and Qualcomm has been hinting at  iPhone beating Android based products, as well a singing the praises of its upcoming Snapdragon chipset.

Carriers may have been working hard to gain the rights to sell Apple's iPhone, but the idea of exclusive access to particular mobile phone handsets is on the way out, according to an analyst.

In the wake of this week's formation of the Symbian Foundation, the LiPS Forum one of two organisations set up to develop Linux-based open handset platforms, has thrown in the towel and joined the other, the LiMo Foundation.
