Sony gets tough with PS3 hackers

Sony has now begun sending letters to those PlayStation 3 owners with the audacity to load on security circumvention software or devices, and then connect to the PlayStation Network.  The Cease and Desist letter indicates that such actions violate the PS3 User Agreement.

Sony has not been afraid to wheel out the legal team in order to keep the PS3 platform as free from piracy as possible.

Until relatively recently the PS3 had been considered hack proof.  Then along came the FailOverflow group exposing the linchpin security keys within the OS and before that, then before that Sony wheeled out the lawyers to clamp down on the sale of the PSJailbreak USB dongle that fooled the games machine into thinking it was in 'debug' mode.

Overnight Sony put the following on its official PlayStation Blog:

"Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for all our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.

By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that PlayStation fans expect and deserve.

Rest assured, this does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines, and we urge all to continue doing so without fear."

The detection of unauthorised software and hacks looks like it has been stepped up with Sony issuing the following letters to folks connected to the PlayStation Network with suspected hacked PS3s.

Important: Access to the PlayStation(R)Network and Access to Qriocity(TM) Services Notice

Unauthorized circumvention devices for PlayStation(R)3 system have been recently released by hackers for the PlayStation(R)3 system.  These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software.

Use of such devices or software violates the terms of your 'System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation(R)3 System' and the 'Terms of Services and User Agreement' for the PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity(TM) and its Community Code of Conduct provisions.  In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws.

A circumvention device and/or unauthorized or pirated software currently resides on your PlayStation(R)3 system.

Immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from your PlayStation(R)3 system.  Failure to do so will result in termination of your access to PlayStation(R) Network and access to Qriocity(TM) services through your PlayStation(R)3 system.

No timeframes for PSN banning have yet been put forward.
