Presto’s scary Halloween stream horrors

Foxtel’s latest attempt to scare up a few new Presto customers comes courtesy of the Halloween tradition, with the promise of bone-chilling thrillers and fun family frighteners to scarily “spook all ages”, but is it enough to scare off Netflix?

The scary prospect of Netflix coming to Australia to scoop up vast swathes of Foxtel and Presto customers is still too weak of a prospect to scare Foxtel or Presto off, with Presto’s latest streaming promotion a hoped-for Halloween scream with current and potential new customers.

Presto’s specially curated collection of Halloween inspired movies arrives just under a couple of weeks before the big spooky day, a collection known as “Halloween Horror with Guaranteed Scares” featuring such titles such as “The Conjuring, Sinister, Evil Dead, Halloween, Insidious Chapter 2 and many other terrifying titles.”

It’s not just about blasting you out of the comfort of your couch with heart-stopping horror, something Netflix may yet still do to Foxtel if and when it ever arrives in Australia, as there’s a series of movies under the “Halloween Fun to Spook the Whole Family” banner.

This selection includes: “Monsters University, Casper, The Haunted Mansion, Paranorman, Scooby Doo – Stage Fright along with a host of other fun frighteners.”

The rest of Presto’s media release on the topic did little to raise my heart rate, as it wasn’t even a rehash from previous releases but an unsurprising re-run, as we’re used to seeing from pay television services, describing Presto’s $9.99 monthly rate with no lock-in contracts, and the ability to enjoy Presto on Google’s Chromecast, on “select” Android tablets, on iDevices and on PCs and Macs.
We also get titles from all of the major movie studios, but the day we’re yet to hear the news that “Hey, Presto, now we have TV shows” is a day that still hasn’t arrived.

Don’t get de-presto over that situation, however, for it is sure to change sometime next year, because once Netflix truly arrives it will send such a spark of spook into Presto executives that Presto will likely be overflowing with as much of everything to give Netflix as big a flick as foxily possible.

Just who scares who in 2015 on the streaming TV front will surely be one of the most interesting reality shows to watch next year, far better than Big Brother, with far more drama than My Kitchen Rules, and with hopefully far less schlock than from titles like The Block.

So, if you do decide to join Presto on its Halloween high horse, may its streams and screams exceed your wildest 2014 pre-Netflix dreams!
