Queensland autonomous drone start-up Emesent has received $3.5 million in venture capital for its technology that aims to make work in mines safer and more productive.

The company's first product, Hovermap, can be installed on drones to collect data in underground areas that are too dangerous for people to survey.

Hovermap can be used in environments where GPS is not present or a human is absent, to create 3D maps and record gas readings, videos and images.

The fund-raising for Emesent was led by Main Sequence Ventures — CSIRO’s Innovation Fund - and also received support from CSIRO’s ON Accelerator program, both supported by the National Innovation and Science Agenda.

A statement from Federal Industry, Science and Technology Minister Karen Andrew said Emesent's technology had been developed from ex-researchers of CSIRO's Data61.

“Emesent has developed game-changing technology with the potential to boost the global mining industry," Andrews said.

"This is a prime example of how investment in Australian research can create new opportunities and value for our economy, including our mining sector.

“This could help improve the productivity of mines and the safety of workers. The data collected provides a better understanding of underground mine conditions, without placing miners in hazardous situations."
