Sweden’s PowerCell signs 3-year contract with European shipyard

By

Fuel cell stack and system developer PowerCell Sweden has announced the signing of a three-year contract with a European shipyard valued at 6.9 million euros for the development and delivery of a megawatt marine fuel cell system.

PowerCell, which did not name the shipyard, says the system to be deployed will be developed and delivered during the three years, with the contract comprising of the marine fuel cell system with a total power of approximately 3 megawatt, MW.

PowerCell cites the International Maritime Organisation IMO’s decision to halve the emissions of Greenhouse Gases from commercial ships by 2050 - and says that considering the long lifetime of ships, zero emission vessels may have to set sail as early as 2030.

The shipyard contract follows PowerCell’s announcement last month that it had received an order for its S3 fuel cell stacks from Bosch at a total value of approximately 1,047,900 euro, with the order to have a “positive financial impact during the first quarter 2020”.

PowerCell said the agreement with Bosch includes a joint development of the S3 and a license whereby Bosch gets the exclusive right to produce and sell the new and improved version of PowerCell S3 for automotive applications such as cars, trucks and buses.
