NBN Co seeks training organisations

By

NBN Co is looking for trainers able to deliver industry-recognised training courses to the people who will actually build the NBN.

NBN Co is seeking expressions of interest from registered training organisations (RTOs) who can deliver courses for eight specific occupations that will be involved in building the NBN. They are labourers, earth moving plant operators, road traffic controllers, telecommunications linesworkers, data and telecommunications cablers, cable jointers, electrical linesworkers, and radiocommunications technicians.

Kevin Brown, head of corporate services, noted that 8000 to 9000 semi-skilled workers will need to be trained within a three month period. The company will also need thousands of skilled workers, who may need anything from two weeks to two years training to upgrade their skills in the relevant areas.

He suggested "a substantial proportion" of the rollout workforce will be hired locally. "A key difference between the NBN's job requirements and those created by the mining boom is that the work of NBN Co is dispersed right across the country."

RTOs accredited to provide ICT10 Integrated Telecommunications, RII09 Resources and Infrastructure Industry, UET09 Electricity Supply Industry Transmission, Distribution and Rail Sector or UEE07 Electrotechnology training packages are invited to respond to NBN Co's request for expressions of interest using the pro-forma available here. The closing date is July 29.
