VIDEO Interview: Lucy Lin previews her ethical AI talk coming Day 2 of StartCon 2019

By

Artificial intelligence is all around us, but as it is programmed by humans, it can exhibit human bias, while there's also the concept of transparent AI, so how do we get real about artificial intelligence?

It's day one of StartCon 2019 as I type, where I've been able to take in the exhibition space along with seeing a couple of presentations thus far.

I caught up with PR impresario Max Markson, who introduced me to one of the speakers he only just met himself: Lucy Lin, the founder and CMO of ForestLyn, an innovation, AI and blockchain marketing company.

ForestLyn isn't a client of Max's, he was simply impressed enough to make the introduction, knowing that I was attending StartCon (an event Max is promoting) - and once I read what Lucy's talk was about, I was interested to know more!

So, what is Lucy's talk titled, and what will it be about?

The talk is called "The AI Dilemma: Is it possible to perfect ethical decision making?", with the description as follows:

"Artificial intelligence (AI) has made its way into more parts of our lives than you probably realise. From self-driving cars to chatbots and job recruiting systems, AI and machine learning is using a large amount of data to make important decisions that are personalised for us.

"But who is checking the human programmer’s work? Will their personal biases also appear within the AI? Also, can we trust the data within the datasets? In today’s world, the biggest challenge of AI and big data is an ethical one.

"In this session, Lucy will talk about ways that AI impacts us, and considerations and recommendations we should be implementing to make our data more ethical."

Here is our video interview, with me in the frame for once, as we discuss ethical AI and just some of what Lucy has planned for tomorrow's talk.

StartCon 2019 attendees can see Lucy's talk live, or they'll be able to catch it via a streamed version of the conference that will be made available to attendees, and which will be available to purchase access to after the event is over.

There's been a ton of great content I haven't been able to see myself in person, so I'll definitely be taking advantage of the conference streaming content site when it becomes available in a week or two.

In the meantime, I'll be at Lucy's event live tomorrow to learn more about ethical AI and what it all means for our technological futures, and, as Lucy explained in our video interview, something we should be demanding from our technology providers given the importance of ethics and values in all aspects of our lives, and especially with AI!
