Two Perth students best at Word and Adobe, off to World Championships

Oh my word, two Perth students "have been named Australia National Champions for Microsoft Word and Adobe Creative Suite, respectively".

The winners of the 2018 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Australian National Championship and the 2018 Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) Australian National Championship have been announced by Certiport, billed as "the leading provider" of performance-based IT certification exams that accelerate academic and career opportunities for learners, and Prodigy Learning, Certiport’s partner in Australia.

In the Microsoft section, Aidan Smith, a student at All Saints College – Bull Creek Campus, a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, took top honours in the competition, winning first place in the Microsoft Word 2016 category.

He and a chaperone will now head to Orlando, Florida, for the MOS World Championship from 29 July to 1 August.

Aidan earned the highest MOS Word exam score in Australia in the qualifying round, which ended on 31 May.

"We’re very impressed by Aidan and all of the students who entered – the competition is growing in Australia and students are proving they can use Microsoft Office tools effectively which will be a key to successful academic and career pursuits,” said Andrew Flood, chief executive, Prodigy Learning.

“We look forward to watching Aidan at the MOS World Championship and we know he will represent Australia well.”

Aidan will be joined in the MOS World Championship Final by UK & Ireland MOS Four Nations Champions Michaela Habartova (University of St Andrews, Scotland), Adam Drummond (St. Ninian's High School, Isle of Man) and Christopher Doyle (UCD, Dublin) who all qualified on 22 June in Design Museum London.

Certiport anticipates more than 150 finalists from more than 60 countries will compete at the MOS World Championship where students will again participate in a unique competition exam in their track. Six winners will receive cash prizes, medals and the title of Microsoft Office Specialist Word, Excel or PowerPoint World Champion.

In the Adobe section, Trinity Ingram, a student from North Metropolitan TAFE, based in Perth, Western Australia, took top honours in the ACA Australian National Championship.

Trinity will now head to Orlando, Florida, for the ACA World Championship.

Trinity earned the highest ACA score in Australia in the qualifying round.

"Adobe certification and participation the ACA competition is growing in Australia and students are proving they can use Adobe creative tools effectively which will be a key to successful academic and career pursuits,” said Flood.

“We’re very impressed by Trinity and all of the students who entered the competition. We look forward to watching Trinity showcase her creativity at the ACA World Championship and we know she will represent Australia well.”

Trinity will be joined in the Adobe ACA World Championship Final by Taylor Sharpe (Coventry University, England) who qualified on 22 June in Design Museum, London, as the Adobe ACA UK & Ireland Champion.

The ACA World Championship is a global competition that promotes industry certification and tests students’ design skills using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Finalists are expected to come from 27 countries to demonstrate their proficiency using industry-leading Adobe software to complete a real-world design challenge for TakingITGlobal, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering youth to understand and act on the world’s greatest challenges.
