Government grant for Canberra crypto developer

Canberra-based QuintessenceLabs has been awarded funding in excess of $1 million from the Department of Defence.

Quantum communications developer QuintessenceLabs is the beneficiary of $1.1 million in matched funding from the Department of Defence's Priority Industry Capability Innovation Program.

The funds will be used to further the development of the company's virtual zeroisation system, which effectively erases data from protected systems in the event of tampering, without the need for operator action to instigate zeroisation.

The system uses QuintessenceLab's one-time pad cipher, which is mathematically proven to be unbreakable.

"The awarding of this contract acknowledges the importance of quantum technology as a practical component for cyber security and anti-tamper products," said John Leiseboer, CTO of QuintessenceLabs.

"We are pleased to contribute to the capabilities of defence through the innovative application of our key management and quantum technologies, especially where our contribution not only increases security and reduces costs, but can also enhance the safety of personnel."
