Numerous established players have been keen to resell Telstra's 3G service but the first to do so is a relatively unknown startup, iTelecom Wholesale.
Announcing the deal Telstra said: "Launched to the market in mid-January, iTelecom Wholesale moved fast to expand the current suite of resale products it buys from Telstra Wholesale - to include postpaid mobile voice and data."
However only a low speed data service will be available: maximum downstream speed 7.2Mbps and typically 330kbps -3Mbps.
iTelecom Wholesale, however will resell the service to other retail service provider, not direct to end users.
Telstra said: "We are also in discussions with other wholesale customers about our 3G product and the level of interest in our offer is encouraging. This offer is Phase one of Telstra Wholesale's 3G offering. Phase two - expected later in 2012, will provide traditional resellers and fully virtual operators - supporting prepaid, postpaid and wireless broadband."
iTelecom Wholesale's chief technology officer, Bruno Giger, said: "Telstra Wholesale's postpaid mobile solution...will underpin our mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) platform and provide a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) solution to retail service providers."
iTelecom Wholesale announced last September that it had signed an agreement with Telstra Wholesale for voice, data and mobile services. "The deal will enable iTelecom Wholesale to wholesale Telstra services enabling fixed and mobile communications providers, internet service providers, resellers and broadcast organisations to access wholesale voice, data and mobile services on the Telstra network," the company said.
