New AARNet deal brings cloud to higher education

By

AARNet today announced a partnership with cloud meeting firm Zoom in a deal that will see it provide cloud-based video collaboration tools to Australia’s research and education sector.

Zoom is a High Definition (HD) web conferencing platform supporting up to 25 HD participants per meeting with integrated tools such as desktop and application sharing, white boarding and instant messaging. In addition, large meeting licences support up to 100 HD video participants.

“Zoom has the potential to revolutionise the way that academics and researchers work together across traditional boundaries such as organizational groupings, technology platforms and geographical locations. We were looking for a video platform that was full-featured but easy to use, and affordable. Zoom ticked all the boxes and we’re excited to offer Zoom to researchers and educators throughout Australia,” said Jamie Sunderland, Director of Product Solutions for AARNet, Australia’s Academic and Research Network.

Zoom said in a statement that its system can be integrated with learning management systems utilising a simple “URL Click to Call” function making it easy for educators to create virtual classrooms that are accessible across a range of devices, including laptops, tablets and smartphones.

“Because Zoom allows guests to easily join meetings, it’s also a great collaboration platform for researchers working with partners outside of their organizations,” said Sunderland.

Zoom cloud infrastructure is hosted on AARNet infrastructure, leveraging the ultra high-bandwidth and low-latency network to deliver a high-quality user experience while supporting potentially thousands of simultaneous meetings.

“Zoom’s partnership with AARNet is a great example of what can be achieved as higher education incorporates advanced cloud services into their IT infrastructure,” said Eric Yuan, Founder and CEO of Zoom. “We are proud to raise the bar for cloud video conferencing, providing quality, ease-of-use, and affordability to colleges and universities everywhere.”
