NEC systems help boost sustainability of WA water resources


ICT services group NEC Australia, says it is delivering an innovative water management system which is enhancing the sustainable management of Western Australia’s water resources.

The WA Department of Water is nearing the completion of a major IT program to modernise its water management systems, with Water Online, an integrated platform delivered by NEC Australia replacing the department’s legacy water management and information systems.

The replaced systems were designed in an era when water was in abundance, and are not suited to manage water effectively in an environment of growing demand and declining water supplies.

NEC says the program is on track for completion by the third quarter of 2016 and will introduce new water demand management capabilities to ensure sustainable water usage - for example, the department will be able to accurately monitor projected development needs to identify gaps between supply and demand, and where necessary, address these issues through water supply controls.

As part of the Water Online program the department has launched a new online portal which, for the first time, allows customers to access licensing information, submit applications and meter readings, and apply to renew or transfer a license. In addition requests for planning advice can be lodged and tracked online, providing a faster and more efficient service, consistent with the WA Government’s reform agenda to reduce red tape and regulatory burden.

Since the program’s commencement in 2014, NEC Australia has delivered program management services and a team of business analysts, developers and testers to implement a core set of Microsoft technologies based on .Net, Dynamics CRM 2015 and the Business Intelligence reporting stack.

“NEC’s performance has been excellent and the team are highly professional,” said Karen Sykes, chief information officer of the WA Department of Water.

NEC Australia’s State Manager for WA, Tim Hurst, said: “Everyone involved in this program is making a valuable contribution, knowing that this will help the Department of Water protect a vital resource for the state’s long term future. We’re also pleased our methodology and agile approach has proven to be very effective.”
