Komatsu digs up $A35 million for Telstra ICT services

Telstra will provide cloud IT services in addition to voice and data communications to Komatsu Australia.


Construction and mining equipment supplier Komatsu Australia has turned to Telstra for its information and communications technology infrastructure.

The $A35 million, five-year deal includes fixed and mobile voice and data communications, as well as cloud-based IT infrastructure. It marks a significant extension to the existing arrangements for the supply of telecommunications services.

In addition to providing the company with a managed data network, Telstra will take over the management of hardware and software that was previously operated in hose. Changing to cloud-based infrastructure will allow Komatsu  to commission new servers or storage capacity on demand.

The cloud infrastructure also includes managed security and disaster recovery.

Komatsu's 42 branches and 35 service depots in the region will be covered by the contract.

"Put simply the new approach brings us cost certainty, managed risk and long term efficiency," said Komatsu Australia president Bill Pike.

"We can focus our attention on growing our business in Australia rather than being distracted by maintaining the physical hardware and software ourselves," he added.

Telstra's enterprise and government group managing director Nerida Caesar said "By integrating network and computing with scaled infrastructure, the Telstra solution will deliver network expansion and service enhancements to Komatsu Australia, that will reduce costs, remove risk, enable the company to manage growth, and importantly ensure business continuity across Komatsu Australia's local and international sites."

Caesar predicted that the new arrangements will increase workforce productivity and reduce the need for travel.
