Macquarie Telecom subsidiary Macquarie Data Centres has broken ground on its new Intellicentre 3 (IC3) data centre in Sydney.

The first phase of the project – due for completion in the second half of 2020 – is an $80 million data centre in Sydney's Macquarie Park Innovation District .

It is aimed at hyperscalers, SaaS providers and global enterprises.

"This facility will leverage our experience, industry-leading customer service and security credentials – which are already trusted by 42% of Australian federal government agencies," said Macquarie Data Centres group executive David Hirst.

"Sovereignty, cyber security and compliance standards are more vital than ever to protect the data and infrastructure of businesses in Australia. Our 18-year data centre experience and security posture make IC3 an ideal inroad for US and other multinational companies to enter the thriving Australian market."

Company officials said IC3 will be certified SCEC Zone 3 or higher, SOC 2, Uptime Institute Tier III, PCI-DSS and ISO 27001 when it opens, as well as a five-star NABERS rating and an industry-leading power usage effectiveness of 1.28.

IC3 will increase the capacity of the Macquarie Park data centre campus to 43MW.

Existing Macquarie data centre customers include Accenture, Marketo, and the Parliament of Australia.

"Macquarie Park is a technology and employment powerhouse and this new centre will deliver a boost to the local community," said NSW Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello.

"Rapid technological change is the new norm and this centre will play a pivotal role in helping organisations prepare for future challenges and opportunities."

IC3 will create approximately 1,200 jobs in construction, engineering and architecture. The company did not mention the number of long-term jobs to be created by the new data centre.
