Review – BUTTONS by i.am+

By

"Technology doesn't have to look like technoloogy," says will.i.am, launching his premium BUTTONS Bluetooth earphones for those who demand uncompromising audio quality and uncompromising style.

BUTTONS certainly looks, feels and sounds like a premium device. It is attractive and cleverly designed. The earbuds are supported by a solid, well, button, that allows you to easily push them in and pull them out of your ear without effort. Very nicely, the buttons are magnetic and clasp together (at your heart, says will.i.am) so you can casually wear your earphones around your neck without losing them or tangling them in your pocket. This is an especially nice and well thought-out feature that I appreciated.

Audio-wise, the sound is crisp and clear with deep bass. The earphones include volume controls, as well as a microphone so you can use it for phone calls as easily as for playing music. The Bluetooth range is 10m, or 30 feet.

I very much enjoyed the audio quality and robust feel of the earphones, crafted from machine metal and paired with a woven fabric cord. Even the circular design is reminiscent is inspired by the iconic look of vinyl records. I'm not entirely convinced I fit the target market of hip, stylish fashionistas but they definitely look good on Naomi Campbell and Kendall Jenner. It is available in eight colours, four of which match Apple-exclusive iPhone 7 colours so, you can find a pair of BUTTONS that matches your ensemble, day and night, formal or informal. "i.am+ BUTTONS aren't just earphones," Kendall Jenner says, "they're also an essential accessory that I consider an important part of what I'm wearing."

BUTTONS is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android. I found pairing the earphones was extremely easy. You literally hold down the power button — nestled between volume up and down — for a couple of seconds, then find "i.am+ BUTTONS" on your device's Bluetooth menu, and connect. From then on, simply hold down the power button to either power on or off the earphones. A nice lady will speak into your ear letting you know you have powered on, or are powering off, or have paired successfully. It worked the first time, and each subsequent time, for me. I did not experience any difficulties with using the earphones at all.

I also very much liked that BUTTONS comes with a decent collection of earbuds and accessories in a range of sizes, to help you get a perfect fit. Definitely, when it comes to earphones it's not one size fits all, and BUTTONS happily recognises this.

You will appreciate from the photos on this page how aesthetic the earphones look, and how attractive you too could look using BUTTONS, while enjoying high-quality audio and phone calls.

For more, here’s my unboxing and simple demonstration of BUTTONS. While not quite will.i.am, I brought out my inner rap star with some Phantom rings bling and matching Splunk hoodie!

With all seriousness though, I did find BUTTONS to be a quality Bluetooth headset, and certainly worth a good look.
