Dell Technologies and Microsoft have announced an expanded partnership that includes a fully native, supported, and certified VMware cloud infrastructure on Microsoft Azure.

Azure VMware Solutions, built on VMware Cloud Foundation, allows organisations to migrate, extend and run existing VMware workloads from on-premises environments to Azure.

Advantages of this approach include the use of a single model for operations based on established tools, skills and processes as part of a hybrid cloud strategy.

Relevant scenarios include app migration and data centre expansion, disaster recovery and business continuity, and modern application development.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella told attendees at Dell Technologies World 2019 that he was "looking forward to getting this into the hands of customers".

Azure VMware Solutions also enables organisations to integrate their software with native Azure services in order to add advanced capabilities like AI, machine learning, and IoT.

It was developed by Microsoft in collaboration with VMware Cloud Verified partners CloudSimple and Dell Technologies subsidiary Virtustream.

Another new aspect of the Dell/Microsoft partnership is integration between Microsoft 365 and VMware Workspace One to manage Office 365 across devices through Microsoft Intune and Azure Active Directory.

Furthermore, VMware will extend the capabilities of Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop leveraging VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure, with a tech preview expected by the end of 2019.

"At Microsoft, we're focused on empowering customers in their digital transformation journey, through partnerships that enable them to take advantage of the Microsoft cloud, using the technologies they already have," said Nadella.

"Together with Dell Technologies and VMware, we are providing our mutual customers with an integrated cloud experience and digital workplace solutions to open up new opportunities and meet their evolving needs."

Dell Technologies chairman and chief executive Michael Dell said: "With this announcement Dell Technologies and Microsoft are working to simplify our customers' entire technology environment.

"Our goal is to provide a single view from edge to core to cloud – an integrated platform for our customers’ digital future."

VMware chief executive Pat Gelsinger. said "Customers are excited to see us expand our collaboration with Microsoft.

"These innovative cloud and client offerings will deliver customers even more value, provide more flexibility to accelerate their hybrid multi-cloud and multi-device journey, and accelerate the digital transformation of their business."

"Today is a really good day for our joint customers," he added.

Further ahead, Microsoft and VMware are exploring other integrations, including VMware NSX with Azure Networking, specific Azure services with VMware management solutions, and specific Azure services for on-premises VMware.
