Cohesity backs up Google Cloud

By

Secondary storage vendor Cohesity has launched Cohesity Cloud Backup Service for Google Cloud, a SaaS product providing enterprise-grade backup and recovery for applications running on Google Cloud.

Cohesity Cloud Backup Service for Google Cloud extends Cohesity's secondary storage platform from on-premises and hybrid cloud to native (Google) cloud.

It is "our first SaaS offering that runs in a public cloud," Cohesity vice-president of product marketing Christian Paulus told iTWire.

Many enterprise workloads still run on-premises, but "all of the new applications are born in the cloud", he said, citing a recent RightScale survey that found 91% of enterprises are using public clouds, with 33% of enterprise workloads already on public cloud. Furthermore, 58% of enterprises plan to move more workloads to the cloud.

But the "shared responsibility model" imposed by cloud providers does present certain challenges, said Paulus. The customer is responsible for backup and recovery, protecting against the loss of data due to a service failure or user error (eg, deleting the wrong file), and complying with data retention requirements.

CCBS covers those areas for workloads running in Google Cloud. It is easy to subscribe to CCBS (consumption-based charges appear on the customer's Google Cloud bill), and a new customer can be backing up within minutes. It can be managed from Cohesity's ML-powered Helios dashboard. The inclusion of predefined policies plus integration with Google Identity and Access Management make implementation even easier.

Cohesity provides highly granular search and recovery, so a particular VM or even an individual file can be easily recovered.

Recovery times are said to be near zero, with recovery point objectives of a few minutes.

The product is "secure by design", said Paulus, with data encrypted at rest and in transit, segregated by customer, and taking advantage of Google security features including Identity and Access Management.

"This allows us to keep the data of customers very safe and secure," he told iTWire.

Cohesity's global variable-length deduplication reduces the amount (and therefore the cost) of secondary service, while the use of Google's snapshot API improves backup and recovery performance, he said.

CCBS is also available as a managed service from various service providers.

"With organisations looking to leverage the cloud and eliminate the need to provision infrastructure, backup of cloud-native workloads is a critical part of the data protection strategy," said Rich Sanzi, vice-president of Engineering, Google Cloud.

"Integrations with technology partners like Cohesity provide a simple and easy backup-as-a-service experience with Google Cloud, empowering customers to focus on what matters most – growing their business."

Cohesity senior vice-president of engineering Vineet Abraham said, "Cohesity has quickly become a preferred choice for customers to back up their cloud and on-premises workloads, and we want to make it easy for enterprises to leverage our innovative and efficient platform no matter where their data resides.

"We're excited to add to the powerful capabilities of GCP so that companies can overcome mass fragmentation challenges and truly maximise the value of their data."
