A strategic partnership between CA Technologies and IBM will see joint development and marketing of new services for IBM’s zCloud.

The first product from this extended relationship is CA Brightside, which is designed to bring the mainframe under the DevOps umbrella.

According to CA, it is the first solution designed to increase the productivity of development teams to control, script and build for the mainframe like any other cloud platform, using familiar open source tools such as Jenkins, Gradle and IntelliJ.

Brightside is available first on zCloud.

"Our clients are accelerating their digital transformation and many are incorporating the mainframe as an essential part of their transformation," said IBM Global Technology Services general manager of infrastructure services, Philip Guido. "To assist our clients, IBM introduced Cloud Managed Services on z Systems (zCloud).

"This service combines the security and power of IBM's mainframe with the flexibility and scalability of the IBM Cloud. IBM and CA are committed to deepening the platform’s role in enterprise digital transformation."

Other CA tools relevant to zCloud users include CA Service Virtualisation, CA Mainframe Operational Intelligence, and CA Data Content Discovery.

"CA and IBM have an opportunity to help our clients overcome challenges in rising costs of IT ownership, workforce evolution and security issues head on," said CA's general manager for mainframes, Greg Lotko.

"Together, we give every company an opportunity to realise even greater value in their investments by combining the reliability of the mainframe with the speed and agility of DevOps."

These software and services are available immediately to zCloud clients in North America, and to those in the rest of the world by the end of 2018.

In related news, CA announced CA Mainframe Resource Intelligence, a SaaS tool that automates scanning and the collection of disparate data to assess and visualise potential savings, optimisation and investment scenarios.

According to research cited by the company, 78% of mainframe clients plan to grow MIPS by 10% within their existing budgets.
