SNIA SIG examines cloud storage

Storage networking body SNIA ANZ has formed its first special interest group, which will deal with cloud storage issues.

Founder members of the SNIA ANZ Cloud Storage SIG are EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, NetApp and Optus.

The SIG's proposed roles include being a forum for discussion of cloud storage technology and services, developing educational content, bringing customer requirements and concerns to the attention of the industry, and promoting standards such as the Cloud Data Management Interface (which was developed by SNIA).

SIG membership is open to all current SNIA ANZ members, but a $300 annual fee will be levied on full corporate members.

"SNIA ANZ perceives intense interest in cloud storage among members and the wider computing infrastructure community," said SNIA ANZ chair Monique McIntosh. "It makes a lot of sense for SNIA ANZ to recognise that interest with a SIG."

"End-users keep telling the SNIA ANZ board that they like the idea of cloud storage, but feel they need to approach it cautiously. Creating this SIG will mean SNIA ANZ can deliver the guidance they need," she added.

Security requirements such as confidentiality, integrity and authentication have become mandatory in most industries.

Data encryption methods previously used only by military and intelligence services have become common practice in all data transfer networks across all platforms, in all industries where information is sensitive and vital (financial and government institutions, critical infrastructure, data centres, and service providers).
