HP scores six year IT outsourcing deal from Downer EDI

Downer EDI has awarded HP a multimillion dollar six-year IT outsourcing contract under which HP will consolidate Downer's eight data centres, five data networks, 36 operating systems and multiple email systems into a single hosted data centre, operating system and network.

According to HP "Applications currently housed on thousands of servers across the organisation will be migrated to HP BladeSystem servers running Microsoft Hyper-V. The result will be a 75 percent reduction in the data centre's footprint - decreasing power consumption, overcall costs and its impact on the environment...

"[HP will deliver] a single Active Directory and an email service built on the HP Enterprise Cloud Messaging platform. A single Active Directory will enable better collaboration through presence, instant messaging and will also make file sharing easier."

Over time HP will also replace Downer's 6,500 desktop and notebook PCs "to create a single standard desktop operating environment, which is easier to maintain and less costly to run."

HP Enterprise Services will build, manage and host the organisation's technology infrastructure on HP Converged Infrastructure.

"Fragmented and inefficient infrastructure was becoming an inhibitor for growth in our organisation," said Joseph Amoia, CIO, Downer. "Simplifying and consolidating our IT infrastructure with HP's innovative, industry-leading infrastructure services will improve collaboration across our business and drive profitability."
